Gestalt Language Processing is a natural style of language development where children learn language in whole chunks through repetition and retention of details within routines. Their language develops from delayed echolalia (using language by repeating things they have heard such as television show scenes, song lyrics, familiar phrases, etc.) to using original, self-generated, and spontaneous language.

Your child may be a gestalt language processor if they:

  • Speak with rich intonation, at times with variable speech clarity

  • Are not yet speaking, but enjoy singing or humming

  • Repeat phrases or portions from shows and movies

  • Appear to have difficulty progressing beyond the use of single words

  • Engage in routine play and thrive with familiarity (i.e., play with toys the same way, repeat videos,

  • prefer routines done the same way each time such as bath time, etc.)

  • Use a limited variety of words and phrases

  • Say words or phrases in the same way each time

We specialize in working with gestalt language processors and supporting children who use echolalia to communicate. We strive to support and guide them through the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) stages by naturally modeling language and affirming their scripts/gestalts through child-led, play-based therapy to facilitate communication and foster their natural way of playing and learning.
